Be Prepared for Floods: Take Action Now

You have the power to prepare for emergencies before they happen. Follow these steps to stay ready for a flood.

Know Your Flood Risk

  • Identify areas near you that are prone to flooding or landslides.
  • Familiarize yourself with your community’s warning systems, evacuation routes, and emergency shelters.
  • Be aware of nearby flood evacuation routes.

During a Flood

  • Unplug appliances to avoid electrical shock when power is restored.
  • Never walk or drive through flooded roads—both cars and people can be swept away by floodwaters.
  • Gather emergency supplies and stay updated through local radio or TV.
  • Turn off gas, electricity, and water if power lines are down, water enters your home, or before evacuating.
  • Secure or bring outdoor items inside to prevent them from floating away.

After a Flood

  • Wear rubber boots and plastic gloves for cleanup.
  • Clean walls, floors, and surfaces with soap and water. Disinfect using a solution of 1 cup bleach per gallon of water.
  • Discard items that can't be disinfected, such as wall coverings, rugs, and drywall.
  • Use fans, air conditioning, and dehumidifiers to dry out your home.
  • Be cautious—floodwater may contain debris.
  • Practice safe hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water and follow local guidance on safe water use for drinking, cooking, and cleaning.

By taking these steps, you can help protect your family and home before, during, and after a flood.
