Pregnancy Testing

Pregnancy Testing Services

There are two types of pregnancy tests commonly available today: urine tests and blood tests. Both methods detect pregnancy by identifying the presence of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced during pregnancy and can be found in either a urine or blood sample.

At the Sullivan County Regional Health Department, we offer Urine Pregnancy Testing to all female clients who request this service. The cost of the test is determined by a sliding fee scale, based on your income and family size. To schedule an appointment, please call our office.

When Should You Get a Pregnancy Test?

A pregnancy test is recommended if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • A missed period
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Swollen or tender breasts
  • Before starting a contraceptive method

How is the Test Conducted?

Specimen Collection:

  • A clean, dry container (plastic or glass) without preservatives is required for the urine sample.
  • The sample will be collected at the clinic during your visit.

Results:

Quick Results:

  • Urine pregnancy test results are available within 5 minutes.

Interpreting the Results:

  • Negative Result: If the test is negative, it means hCG was not detected in the urine. If pregnancy is not desired, family planning services and birth control options will be discussed. If pregnancy is desired, and your period does not occur, we recommend a repeat test in one month.
  • Positive Result: A positive test confirms pregnancy. Counseling is available to help you understand your options. Early prenatal care is encouraged to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Our nursing staff will provide valuable information about medical providers, insurance options (such as TennCare), proper nutrition (including WIC), and healthy habits during pregnancy.
