Tennessee Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Programs (TAPPP)

The Tennessee Pregnancy Prevention Program has three goals:

  • To promote community awareness and involvement in adolescent pregnancy and parenting issues
  • To facilitate collaboration among diverse programs in the community to enhance and increase prevention efforts
  • To coordinate, improve and expand services available to parents and pregnant/parenting teens

What can be done to prevent teen pregnancy?

For Parents

  • Start early
  • Talk openly about relationships and expectations
  • Ask important questions
  • Be an “askable parent” not a friend
  • Supervise and monitor your children and adolescents
  • Know you children’s friends and their families
  • Discourage early, frequent, and steady dating
  • Help your teenagers to have options for the future that more attractive than early pregnancy and parenthood
  • Let your kids know that you value education highly
  • Know what your kids are watching, reading, and listening to

For Youth

  • Be clear about your values when dating
  • Ask adults important questions
  • Set Boundaries
  • Decide if you are ready to start dating
  • Talk openly with your parents
  • Think about the future and how life decisions can affect your plans

Remember talking about teen pregnancy prevention is hard, but experiencing teen pregnancy is harder.
